PILOTING THE STRAIT
Piloting the Strait is the title of a valuable book written by Bro. Dave Miller, former Director of the Brown Trail School of Preaching in Ft. Worth. It is subtitled, "A Guidebook for Assessing Change in Churches of Christ." It provides valuable information needed by every preacher and elder to help them understand the problems now confronting the church and how to protect their flocks from those who would do them harm. It cost $20 and may be ordered from The Gospel Advocate, P. O. Box 150 Nashville, TN 37202 or the Firm Foundation, P. O. Box 69, Damon, TX 77430. The "CORE/BULL'S EYE GOSPEL" CONCEPT REFUTED (A Review)
This slender volume by Curtis Cates is "a response to some of the modernists/liberals in the Churches of Christ." It addresses the question, "Shall we have a new ‘cultural church'?" Bro. Cates, reviews and responds to C. Leonard Allen's The Cruciform Church (ACU Press); The Worldly Church by Richard Hughes and Michael Weed (ACU Press); The Core Gospel by Bill Love (ACU Press) and The Peaceable Kingdom by Carroll Osborn of ACU. Readers should take note of these names because they are among the chief promoters of the change movement among our brethren. Furthermore it is significant that all of them have some connection with Abilene Christian University, which under the leadership of president Royce Money, has become the fountainhead of teaching advocating radical changes for the Lord's church. Change agents discount any of their critics who do not have academic credentials equal to theirs. Bro. Cates holds the Doctor of Education degree from the University of Alabama. He has preached for 35 years and spent over 20 years training preachers. (Continued on p. 4). While his style of writing does not always flow smoothly, the author has amassed a vast collection of damning quotes from these change agents which will turn the head of all who love the truth and stir the blood of every faithful child of God. This book is worth reading. JHW

KOINONIA
Some years ago Bro. Jimmy Jividen wrote an excellent book entitled Koinonia, A Contemporary Study of Church Fellowship. It was truly a book ahead of its time. He addresses the age old issues of the scope and limits of Christian fellowship; How to decide with whom we are in fellowship? What about those who claim to be members of the church but don't adhere to New Testament teachings? In reading it, one would think he was contemplating the very issues of the change movement that bedevil us today. Every preacher and elder would be well-rewarded by reading this book. It is thoroughly biblical and is designed for class use. Preachers could easily find a dozen sermons to preach within its pages. It may be ordered from the Gospel Advocate, P. O. Box 150, Nashville, TN 37202.
A CAPPELLA MUSIC IN THE PUBLIC WORSHIP OF THE CHURCH
A few years ago Bro. Everett Ferguson wrote A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church. The author, a man of extensive scholarship, traces the grammatical, historical and doctrinal aspects of church music and reaches the conclusion we have long known and accepted in our churches: the Bible authorizes only a cappella singing in worship to God. The early Christians understood and observed this limitation. Those who lead need to read this book. It may be ordered from the Gospel Advocate, P. O. Box 150, Nashville, TN 37202.
