What Does Gospel Mean?
Dear Mr. Waddey: "I often hear preachers use the word, ‘gospel.' Just what does that mean?" B.G.
Our English word gospel derives from the Greek word euangelion which simply means "good news."
Christ commissioned us to "go preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). The good news we preach is the message of salvation in Christ. Paul wrote, "I make known unto you... the gospel which I preached unto you... that Christ died for our sins..., that he was buried; and... raised on the third day according to the scriptures" (I Corinthians 15:1-4).
The gospel includes not only those basic fundamental facts about Jesus, but really the whole of God's plan for saving us. It is good news because, "He that believeth (the gospel) and is baptized shall be saved" from the guilt of sin (Mark 16:16). It is good news because those who embrace and obey the gospel will spend eternity with Christ in heaven.
The gospel is for you! Have you made its good news yours?
