MILLENNIAL MANIA
As the century was drawing to an end there was a blizzard of uninformed speculation about the return of Christ and the end of the world. Many movies, books, and sermons produced more smoke than light on the subject. Even unbelievers rushed to make money on these phenomena. Only from the Bible can we find reliable information about these great events. The following items are facts:
Jesus will return. He said, “I will come again” (John 14:3).
No man knows the time of Christ's coming, not even himself (Matthew 24:36).
When he returns there will be a resurrection of the righteous and wicked dead and a transformation of the living (John 5:28-29).
When he comes, Christians will meet him in the air and ever be with the Lord (I Thessalonians 4:16-17).
At that time the world will be destroyed by fire (II Peter 3:10).
There are many unfounded assumptions about the Lord's return.
That he will reign over an earthly kingdom for a literal thousand years. He said, "My kingdom is not of this world" (John 18:36).
That the Jewish people will all return to Palestine and occupy the land promised to Abraham, David and Solomon.
That there will be a literal carnal war between the forces of evil and the forces of Christ.
That there will be two or more resurrections.
That there will be a temporary rapture where the righteous will be caught up in the heavens and then returned to earth.
That a literal, personal man of sin or antichrist will lead a carnal war against God's Son and his people.
That a material Jewish temple will be rebuilt in Jerusalem.
History records that millennial mania has arisen at the turn of every century since the church began. This mania has been multiplied tenfold at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and now 2,000 AD.
To believers, God’s word says, “Let no man beguile you” concerning the Lord’s return (II Thessalonians 2:3). Genuine Christianity is without speculation. The recorded facts should be sufficient for God's people.
